Description
This is the Talismanic Card in Wallet or Window Wallet that inspired Dave Bendix to create the Bendix Bombshell. This wallet was made by Roy Roth, but it is based on the original ones made by Ed Brown. Ed Brown created the Window Wallet c. 1975 and a routine using it was published in Kabbala Vol.3, No. 1, January 1976, called: Between Elmsley, Brown, and Himber. The Window Wallet was the inspiration for a number of great card men including, Ed Marlo, Dave Solomon (using Ed Brown’s own wallet), Jon Rachenbaumer (Talismanic Card in Wallet – Lecture Notes 1, 1976) , and Dave Bendix to create some wonderful Card to Wallet routines. The second you see the the diagram on page 1 of the Kabbala article you will recognize the familiar set-up for the special Himber wallet that we recognize today as the Bendix Bombshell.
Having seen both wallets up close I really like the cleanness of The Talismanic Card and made it up using some of the new Jerry’s Nuggets cards and it looks and works perfectly. The Bendix might be a tad more impressive but it is also a little harder to work so for many people the Talismanic will be a welcome surprise.

History (by Roy Roth): The origin of this basic effect can be unmistakably traced to Alex Elmsley. It was introduced in ABRACADABRA No. 335, Vol. 13 (June 28th., 1952). The effect was called ‘Between your palms’ and appeared to be an impossible mystery, where a Spectator is given a card to hold … three cards are later chosen … one of these selections is initialed, two of them are found in standard ways, and the last initialed card is found to be the one given to the Spectator PRIOR to the effect. Apparently the effect caught only a few discerning eyes.
In 1964 Ed.Mario worked out a couple of methods which were later published in HIEROPHANT No. 3 (March 1970), in an Article entitled ‘Signed card in —- ‘. In 1967, Larry Jennings included the original Elmsley effect in his lecture notes. In August 1969, P. Howard Lyons published Roy Walton’s ‘Card Case’ in IBIDEM 34/35 which used principles from ‘Between your palms’, but offered a different handling and the card case addition.
Dave Solomon of Chicago, Illinois, showed a Wallet version of the Elmsley Premise that was developed by Ed. Brown of Champaign, Illinois. The Wallet was patterned after the now standard Himber Wallet … and at the time R.A.R. MAGIC … was Commissioned by one Dave Bendix to make and supply three Wallets, each with the owners’ initials Blocked in Gold Leaf upon them. The initials were for Ed. Marlo, Jon Racherbaumer, and Dave Bendix. At the time R.A.R. MAGIC were requested not to discuss the Wallet or its uses to anyone, until such time as was deemed by the Inventor.
Further references to this effect can be found by Ed. Marlo’s version in ‘Breaking the Circle’, called ‘I won’t even Look’ and also in Frank Garcia’s ‘Super Subtle Card Miracles’ 1973 as Miracle Worker. In KABBALA Vol. 3, No, 1 – entitled … ‘Between Elmsley, Brown and Himber’ also in Jon Racherbaumer’s Lecture Notes, entitled ‘Talismanic Card in Wallet’ .
Now that the whole of the Wallet Mystery has appeared in the Kabbala … apart from our part in the matter that is … we were surprised to receive a letter from one Norman Hartweg of Studio City, California, in February 1979, in which he writes the following :
In his Publication Kabbala 3 (and Lecture Notes 1), Jon Racherbaumer details an effect called ‘Talismanic Card in Wallet’ which uses a special Himber Wallet. The effect is superb. After a great deal of fruitless searching for such a Wallet, I wrote to Jon expressing dismay that he would continue to provide us with mouth-watering routines that require an unavailable Wallet. He wrote back, telling me the History of the item. Dave Solomon had exactly six made for him by Ed. Brown, then later had three ‘Specials’ made for him by you for himself, Jon and Ed. Marlo. We wrote back and said ‘Yes, indeed, we did make the three Wallets for Dave Bendix.’ He wrote back and said ‘the best news I’ve had in years; after all this time to acquire one of these Wallets signifies that in some mysterious way I’ve gained the favour of the Gods.
Effect: Performer opens a Wallet and displays a face-down card showing through a plastic window. This, he says, is his ‘Lucky Card’. Leaving the Wallet open on the table, he then picks up a Pack of cards. A Spectator is asked to choose one of the cards and show it to the rest of the audience, or sign it (whichever is more convenient at the time). The card is then shuffled back into the Pack.
A second card is chosen by a Spectator, but not marked. This again is shuffled back into the Pack.
Performer then reveals the name of the second card and places it into the pocket of the Wallet – face down.
He then attempts to find the first card in the Pack … but fails. He calls on his ‘Lucky Card’ to help him and removes the ‘Lucky Card’ from behind the window …. he turns it over and this card has now become the exact chosen card of the Spectator. How is this – when the card had been in full view … EVEN BEFORE the Spectator chose it from the Pack ?
