Description
This is a clever little item from the great magical inventor Ed Massey himself. It is not particularly high quality as the boards are made from thick cardboard but the idea is clever and the appearance of the silks is quite a surprise. With a little thought you could probably create some nice patter and production items that went along with the story.
When using this you have to be wary of your angles and although it is quite flexible and easy to do you certainly have to spend some time in a mirror. It is also surprisingly difficult to pierce the tissue and pull silks from each hole, not sure if it is possible to make this look very good as it takes quite a while to produce items that way. In addition, due to the cardboard you will have to add tape where the gimmick meets the boards and this will be an ongoing thing – it would have been wiser to add some stronger material here, or make the whole thing from plastic in the first place.
Max Andrews in England built his version in plastic when he made these under license and I’m confident many of the issues with the original Massey version would be improved with the Max Andrews plastic version.
Includes:
- Toto The Clown
- 8 12″ silks as production items (bonus).
Effect: Two hinged sheets of composition board are shown. There are eight holes in each so that when the boards are folded together the holes line up. Magician places a sheet of paper between and closes the boards together. Thus eight little drum-heads are formed. Each drum-head is punctured in turn and a silk is produced. Between the productions the boards may be opened and the paper shown again, replaced and the production of silks continued.
There is a clown’s head on the face of the front board so designed that the pompoms of his clown makeup are the holes for the silks to be drawn from. The nose and mouth provide other holes for silks; eight in all. Excellent for children’s shows. Easy to do and unique in appearance.
Approximate size 10 x 10 inches.
