Description
Effect: This latest edition of my lecture notes incorporates some of the best stuff from the prior notes and some new items I think will intrigue you.
As I contemplate my likes and dislikes in magic , (referring now solely to the performing aspect), I find myself looking not to the particular effects being invented and marketed, but rather to my own performing style. We all go through the same development: As children, we desperately want to be the magician onstage, and the way to achieve that, it seems to us, is to purchase the same equipment that magicians use. That’s the first step in self-deception. It takes a long time to acknowledge that some other people’s effects and routines simply don’t work for us. But what does? And how do we know when it does? Those are tough questions.
One way to gauge effects, as well as you are skill in performing at, is whether you are comfortable performing them. In fact, if there is one barometer for assessing our readiness to be standing in front of an audience and doing this sort of thing, it is comfort level. Thus, if an effect is too funny for you, or too dramatic, or too anything, pass on it. And, if, when performing, you find yourself thinking about the mechanics of the effect, rather than the entertainment, you are simply not ready to be doing magic.
