Description

This effect was mentioned in Annemann’s 202 Methods of Forcing c. 1933 titled: Two Number 1 to 6 Force with Dominoes. Ted mentions “forced by the old domino ruse of stealing out one domino.” So it sounds like it was around even before 1933.

I have been trying to track down the origin of this effect for sometime because it is a popular item as you can see by the versions I have here. The earliest dealer version I have tracked down is certainly from Mac Made Magic c. 1945.

This is Wild Magic’s version. It uses some nice quality wooden bars with colors that are like dominoes but simplified with just two colored spots on each bar.

Effect: The effect is simple and clean: the spectator mixes the wooden bars and lays them out in domino fashion and each time you predict what the two end dominoes will be.

The method is easy to do, but not easy to figure out and the prediction you make can be different every time. In fact, you could easily do this effect 3 times in a row, each time predicting a different outcome as they mix and lay out all of the bars.

For the finale you could even be blindfolded and still determine the final outcome, without seeing or touching the bars.
