Description

Effect: (From the introduction): My previous major publishing venture was Mortimer’s Magic Magazine. This was a series of 13 spiral-bound publications, averaging 50 pages each and put out quarterly. Magician’s Home Companion is using Mortimer’s, with its excellent contributors, as the base on which to build. That probably makes us the “newest old publication” in magic. I grew tired of publishing Mortimer’s in that format and decided to try for something bigger and better. This book is the result. Is it difficult trying to develop a new magic book and then fill it with over 100 pages of worthwhile magic copy? The following illustration fairly well sums up what the feeling is like.

Mortimer’s Magic Magazine began with the purpose of presenting new routines, ideas, and patter for the magician who wanted to add it to his stage show, do it at a magic meeting, or simply amaze his friends without having to spend years practicing. As time went on, Close-Up magic did make its way into Mortimer’s because that is what many magicians were contributing. That was fine because it gave a balance to the magic being presented.

Magician’s Home Companion will try to follow the same goals which made Mortimer’s popular and successful. The emphasis will be on magic that can be done with a minimum of sleights and those will be the ones that most magicians know or should know. Hopefully, stage props can be dusted off and used again to entertain once you see what else can be done with them. You won’t even have to put away your Close-Up magic tricks because I’m sure there will still be many of them. So our goal can be summed up as: providing you with practical and useful inform^ tion about magic. Perhaps it’s not as noble as saving mankind, but at least it is one the Magician s Home Companion can achieve.

Magician’s Home Companion is a good title because it represents the folksy, “down-home” type of publication which was the goal of Mortimer’s. This is the same approach that this series of books will take. The goal of Mortimer’s and now Magician’s Home Companion is to be your “magic companion.” We’ll give advice and tips on just about anything magical, but it won’t be coming down from Mount Olympus engraved on tablets of concrete. This publication will be written as if you were sitting with us and we’re talking with you, not just at you.
