Description
The Supalok was released by Mick Hanzlik in the UK c. 2004. Mick eventually created three different sizes (Standard, Midi, and Maxi). This is the Midi one and at about 3″ x 2″ it is the perfect size for most routines. What I particularly like about this lock is that the whole effect is done in the spectators hands. They handle the keys the lock and all magic still happens in their hands 🙂
The only downside was that the lock only comes with a few rudimentary ideas for routines, and one risque routine by Wayne Dobson which does not fit my style. Luckily after reading Steve Cook’s book Fake Genius this all changed because on page 26 there is a Harry and Bess Houdini routine featuring Supalok and it is perfect. So I decided to bring all the pieces together for this description.
This is easy to do, with a wonderful routine and a truly wonderfully engineered lock that is very hard to find these days. I think you’ll love it 🙂
Includes:

Effect: There have been many Lock & Key effects in Magic.. . the Spirit lock, Seven Keys to Baldpate, The Master padlock, Perplexing Padlock, etc. What you have in your posession now, is, in my opinion, one of the most mysterious and convincing lock effects ever. After much research and development, I believe that I have finally come up with the ultimate Lock & Key effect.
The performer hands out a brass bodied padlock, familiar to just about everybody, and four keys. From this moment, the performer does not touch the lock or keys. He asks the spectator to find the only key that will open the lock. All four keys are tried, but none of them will open the lock. The performers then says, “That’s because I’ve got the only key that works.” He then gives the spectator this fifth key and it opens the lock. The open lock is then locked onto the spectator’s finger ring, jacket buttonhole, etc. and the keys are mixed up. The performer then says that he will use his powers to try to influence the selection of the correct key. The spectator chooses a key, and this is discarded.
He chooses three more, which are also discarded, leaving just one. He tries this key and the lock opens!
Supalok Features:
- It must be a lock that is normal looking and familiar to all
- All the keys must be different
- It must be operated by the spectator and not the performer
- Instant Beset
SupaLok meets all of these criteria.
Lovelocked Routine: (By Steve Cook) I sincerely feel that what follows is a really lovely piece of theatre, incorporating a very engaging Houdini story, which is partly true, partly apocryphal. This hardly matters, however, so long as the so-called facts you present to your audience are done with total conviction, in order to sustain (apparent) realism. Award winning Italian mentalist Luca Volpe made the following quote about this effect: “It’s a wonderful routine and a beautiful story!“
A Bess and Harry Houdini story is told about how, after Houdini’s death, Bess continually tried to communicate with him. The performer then seems to prove that apparently she was successful.
